Diff Checker
Compare two texts side by side and find every difference. Additions, deletions, and unchanged lines are highlighted in distinct colors. Perfect for code reviews, document edits, and configuration changes.
Diff Checker — Compare Text Files Online Free: Free Diff Checker tool: compare two texts side by side and find differences instantly. Highlight additions, deletions, and changes. Free online diff tool.
How to Compare Text
Paste Both Versions
Enter the original text on the left and the modified version on the right. Works with any text — code, prose, configuration files, CSV data.
Click Compare
The diff engine compares line by line and highlights additions (green), removals (red), and unchanged lines (gray). Toggle options to ignore whitespace or case differences.
Review Changes
Scroll through the highlighted diff output. The stats bar shows the total count of added, removed, and unchanged lines.
What Is a Diff Checker?
A diff checker (short for "difference checker") compares two pieces of text and identifies what changed
between them. The concept originates from the Unix diff utility, created by Douglas McIlroy at
Bell Labs in 1974. The tool computes the Longest Common Subsequence (LCS) between two texts to produce a
minimal set of changes that transform the original into the modified version — the same algorithm used by
Git, SVN, and every modern version control system.
In software development, diff checking is fundamental to the code review process. When a developer submits a pull request, reviewers see a diff showing exactly which lines were added, modified, or removed. This focused view is far more efficient than reading entire files — you only need to understand the changes, not the complete codebase. GitHub, GitLab, and Bitbucket all display diffs as their primary review interface.
Beyond code, diff checking is valuable for any scenario involving text revisions. Legal teams compare contract versions to identify clause changes. Content writers track editorial revisions across draft iterations. System administrators compare configuration files before and after changes to verify exactly what was modified. Database administrators compare schema definitions to understand migration changes.
Our tool performs a line-by-line diff with optional whitespace and case normalization. Lines present only in the original are marked as removals (red), lines present only in the modified text are additions (green), and identical lines appear as unchanged (gray). This visual approach makes even subtle changes immediately apparent — a single character difference in a 500-line file stands out clearly.
Why Use Our Diff Checker?
Color Coded
Additions in green, removals in red, unchanged in gray. Visual highlighting makes differences instantly scannable, even in large texts.
Flexible Options
Toggle whitespace and case sensitivity to focus on meaningful changes. Ignore formatting differences when reviewing content edits.
Change Statistics
See the total count of added, removed, and unchanged lines. Quickly assess the scope of changes before diving into details.

Everything runs locally in your browser. Your code, documents, and configuration files are never uploaded to any server.
Frequently Asked Questions
Our tool uses a line-by-line comparison algorithm based on the Longest Common Subsequence (LCS) approach. It identifies the maximum set of lines present in both texts (in the same order), then everything else is classified as either an addition (present only in the modified text) or a removal (present only in the original). This is the same fundamental approach used by Git diff.
Yes — the tool works with any text including source code in any programming language. The monospace font and line-by-line display are designed for code comparison. For large codebases, dedicated tools like Git or VS Code's built-in diff are more powerful, but for quick comparisons of files or snippets, our tool is faster than setting up a local diff.
When enabled, differences in spacing (tabs vs spaces, trailing whitespace, multiple spaces) are ignored. Lines that differ only in whitespace are treated as identical. This is useful when comparing code that may have been reformatted, or text that was pasted from different sources with different spacing conventions.
The tool runs in your browser, so the limit is your device's available memory. Texts up to 10,000 lines compare instantly. Very large texts (50,000+ lines) may take a few seconds. For best performance, compare the specific sections that changed rather than entire large files.
No — this tool is designed for text comparison only. Binary files (images, compiled executables, archives) will display as garbled characters. For binary comparison, use specialized tools like hexdump diff or Beyond Compare. Our tool works best with plain text, source code, CSV, JSON, XML, and similar text formats.
