Engineering Guide: Principles & Formula Details
Round-Trip Efficiency (RTE) is the definitive thermodynamic measure of energy storage performance, defined as the percentage of electrical energy put into a storage battery that can be successfully retrieved and delivered to electrical loads (RTE = Energy Out / Energy In). No battery is 100% efficient. Due to internal electrochemical resistance, electrolyte ion diffusion barriers, and semiconductor power electronics switching losses, a portion of every stored kilowatt-hour is permanently dissipated into the environment as waste heat.
System coupling architecture fundamentally dictates overall efficiency. In a DC-Coupled Hybrid system (such as Sol-Ark, SolarEdge Energy Bank, or Schneider Electric), high-voltage DC electricity generated by rooftop solar panels flows directly into the battery pack via an internal MPPT charge controller without ever converting to AC. The electricity is only inverted to AC once when home appliances demand power, achieving high end-to-end round-trip efficiency between 90% and 94%.
Conversely, AC-Coupled systems (such as Tesla Powerwall 2, Enphase IQ Battery 5P, or FranklinWH) undergo a triple-conversion penalty. Solar DC is first inverted to 240V AC by rooftop inverters, sent down to the battery where an internal bidirectional inverter rectifies it back to DC to charge the lithium cells, and finally inverted back to 240V AC when discharging to the home. Each conversion stage loses 3% to 6% of energy, dragging overall system AC-to-AC round-trip efficiency down to 80% to 86%.
Over a 10-year warranty period, a 6% to 10% difference in round-trip efficiency carries substantial financial consequences. For a homeowner cycling a 13.5 kWh battery pack daily in a high-cost electricity market (e.g. California or New England at $0.35/kWh), an AC-coupled battery loses roughly 2.3 kWh per day compared to only 1.1 kWh for a DC-coupled system. This 1.2 kWh daily difference accumulates into over 4,300 kWh of lost solar electricity over 10 years, costing the homeowner more than $1,500 in wasted clean energy.

Frequently Asked Questions
Modern lithium iron phosphate (LiFePO4) and NMC residential batteries achieve 88% to 94% round-trip efficiency in DC-coupled hybrid configurations. AC-coupled systems generally deliver 82% to 88% round-trip efficiency.
Solar panels generate DC power and batteries store DC power. DC-coupled systems transfer energy directly from panels to battery with one MPPT conversion. AC-coupled systems convert DC to AC, then AC back to DC to charge, and then DC back to AC to discharge—losing energy at each conversion step.
The Tesla Powerwall 2 is an AC-coupled battery with a manufacturer-rated round-trip efficiency of 90%. However, independent field testing (such as Australia ITP battery trials) shows real-world AC-to-AC efficiency averages between 83% and 86% under varying temperatures and idle power draws.
Lost energy is converted into heat due to electrical resistance inside the lithium cells, resistance in wiring and fuses, and thermal dissipation across the transistors and transformers inside the inverter/charger.
